The Paca and Tubman houses located in West Village became open to students in fall 2008, but not for a cheap price.

The Paca and Tubman houses are owned by Capstone Companies as a part of Towson University’s Housing and Residence Life.

The cost to live in these residence halls is $3,115 a semester compared to the Glen Complex priced at $2,628 and Scarborough and Prettyman Halls costing $2,428 per semester.

The Paca and Tubman houses have private bathrooms, individually controlled heating and air-conditioning and brand new appliances and carpet. Students must apply to live in these buildings. The new housing costs more because they come with newer amenities, assistant vice president for student affairs in Housing and Residence Life, Jerry Dieringer, said.

Dieringer also talked about the application process for living in the new housing.

According to Dieringer, there is a separate application for living in the new residence halls so no one is placed there randomly.

“You actually have to apply. There is a separate application process and a separate fee,” Dieringer said. “So the University can’t assign someone to Paca or Tubman… they are completely separate contracts.”

Although the newer housing does cost more, many students think it is well worth the price. Junior Jordan Moyer moved into West Village after spending a year in the Glen Complex. Moyer said she believes that compared to the Glen Towers, West Village was worth every penny.

“I chose to live there because it was new...” Moyer said. “And I really wanted my own bathroom.”

Although Moyer said she liked having her own bathroom and sink area, she did not care for the location of the new housing, which is across from Burdick Field on Osler Drive.

“It was too far from campus and there was only one food place,” Moyer said. “Also, not many people went outside like at the Towers.”

Compared to Scarborough and Prettyman halls, West Village is almost $700 more per semester.

However, Scarborough and Prettyman do not come with air-conditioning units, the rooms are smaller and have community bathrooms.

Unlike West Village, the University residence halls are not available upon request until the student’s sophomore year. A freshman who applies only for University housing will randomly be put into Prettyman Hall, Scarborough Hall, the Glen Towers, Residence Tower, Ward Hall, West Hall, Newell Hall or Richmond Hall.

“Students who are in University housing are assigned based on space available, and it is random,” Dieringer said.
