What I’ve learned at TU

Despite getting ‘punk’d’ often, Towson was worth it

When I considered going to graduate school two years ago, there were a few factors that needed to be adhered to before I made my decision.

Aside from picking a school that offered the program I wanted to study, I needed a school that was close to home, would offer something in terms of a challenging journalistic experience, and had a good school newspaper that I could write for.

Towson had everything I was looking for. It was almost a match made in heaven.

My perfect plan almost got shot to hell before it even started.

First off, my transcripts from West Virginia University mysteriously were misplaced.

“Really? I’m pretty sure they send those things electronically now. Is it even possible to lose a transcript anymore?”

Then my application for in-state tuition was rejected for some reason.

“My permanent address is in Maryland. My application for parking includes my Maryland state tags. Did the clowns down at the Bursar’s office even read the application before they tried to charge me an arm and a leg?”

Then when that was finally fixed, I couldn’t get signed into any of the classes that I needed to start my first semester.

“Urgh, I should have just gone to University of Maryland with the smart kids.”

When I tried to call my advisor to resolve that issue, I was told by an anonymous secretary,

“You don’t have one. We don’t have you on record as having an advisor. Do you go to Towson?”

“Really? Ummm okayyyy. Is this a joke? It really isn’t funny because I am about ten seconds away from choking you through the phone.”

I finally made it through all that crap and actually made it to the first day of school with a somewhat filled-out schedule. Then, in what would be the first of many angering moments in the Towsontown parking garage, I accidentally parked my car in a handicap spot, setting me back most of the money I set aside to buy my books.

“FML.”

The funny thing is my time at Towson was filled with moments just like these.
It has been in classes, in the Towerlight office, in the library, uptown.

Anywhere and everywhere, it has been a two-year series of my own reality show, but it felt like I’m getting punk’d at every turn.

But it has been those moments that have made my time here so memorable.

I learned a lot of things that I will carry with me as I look for a career, and met a lot of people that I will never forget. I wouldn’t trade my time at Towson for anything.

“Well...maybe a Redskins Super Bowl, but that is probably it. See you in my next lifetime…”
